Packman Broccoli

Broccoli

About all the Packman Broccoli has been harvested.  I prefer Packman to another good variety for Houston, Green Comet.  Packman continues to produce side shoots much longer.  These shoots, shown in the picture, have very tender stems so that the stems are cooked tender about the same time as the heads.  For the full head it is always hard to get the stem tender without overcooking the head.  I actually prefer the shoots to the full head.  The broccoli will go out next week to make room for beans.

In other news, some of the Black Seeded Simpson lettuce is bolting.  I planted a second later planting of Red Sails.  It is about ready for harvesting while all the earlier planting are about finished.  I am sprouting some Florida Staysweet corn indoors for planting next week before I got to Montana for three weeks of skiing.  Collards are still producing and the Sugar Snap peas look great but have not started blooming yet.
